If you've ever read any of my past articles, you may be thinking, Wait a minute, aren't you that girl that got pregnant with an IUD?! Well, lol, yeah that's me. But my IUD pregnancy ended up being ectopic (or in my Fallopian tube). I decided not to have that IUD removed during surgery because my odds of getting pregnant would still be the same — and likely higher — on any other form of birth control. IUDs are one of the most effective forms of birth control, with over 99% effectiveness. TBH, though, the main reason I kept it is that the Paragard is the only hormone-free, long-term form of birth control on the market — and I don't do well with hormones.
Remember, shaving is a risk for infection, bleeding, scarring. Dr. Puza said, "Folliculitis is a small collection of infections and are one of the risks of shaving your butt. Another risk is hemorrhage. The skin of the anus and butt is extremely vascular. A sharp object can do a tremendous amount of damage to that area. Similarly, if bleeding is a risk, so is scarring. Any time that the skin is injured and the wound is deep enough, you run the risk of causing a scar to form. And, all of these risks are increased if you can’t see what you are doing, so use a mirror!"

Kelly brought out this thing — kinda like a ninja throwing star, only for your face — that they call the Multi-Sculpt. It has six edges, each for a different specific use. Here's how FaveGym broke it down on their website:
Long Edge: De-puffs, contours, aids lymphatic drainage
Grip: Sculpts, aids lymphatic drainage, releases tension
Medium Edge: Aids lymphatic drainage, sculpts, and defines cheekbones
Teeth: Increases circulation, plumps out fine lines, and stimulates collagen and elastin production
Short Edge: Lifts, de-puffs the eye area, and releases eyebrow tension
Tip: Reduces facial tension
This thingy felt good and would totally be great to use on yourself if you have sinus problems! Like the Face Ball, it's also pretty tough to break.
My rating: 7/10

So let's skip the small talk. This 15 ml bottle of eye serum costs $147. It's from a luxury skincare brand, Epara, and its market are people who choose to invest a bigger buck in their cosmetics. I knew when I opened the thick, embossed box and found the glass bottle perfectly sitting upright in the center, almost like a royal crest on display at a museum, that the price tag would be hefty. And as a woman in my 30s more intentional about consuming luxury and more intentional about what I put in and on my body, I LOVE THIS FOR US!
Before we even get into the performance of the product (spoiler alert: it's great!), there's a void of luxury created by Black people and marketed to Black people in both the fashion and beauty space. There's long been this notion that Black consumers devalue luxury brands, when in reality research shows that high-fashion brands benefit from increased brand awareness, relevance and sales when Black celebrities, often hip-hop artists, verbally nod the brands or collaborate with them. According to a 2017 essay by Business of Fashion, Gucci's Dapper Dan collaboration drove brand searches "across the e-commerce sites Lyst aggregates." The essay also reports that Virgil Abloh’s Off-White became "the third-hottest fashion brand in the world in Q3," while "the massive 217 percent spike in searches for Christian Louboutin shoes since June is attributed to [Cardi B's] 'red bottoms, bloody shoes' hit 'Bodak Yellow.'" And in recent years, we've seen more luxe Black fashion designers, like LaQuan Smith and Pyer Moss' Kerby Jean-Raymond, get the mainstream attention they deserve.
Beauty, however, seems to be lagging behind fashion in this regard. Makeup artist of all makeup artists Pat McGrath made huge waves with the launch of Pat McGrath LABS, her namesake makeup line which is significantly more expensive than a lot of competing brands. But there's still a lot of room for more luxury Black-owned beauty. Brands like Epara aren't just a symbol of how far Black creators have come in the disproportionately white luxury space, but they're absolutely essential for inclusion and equity! So yes, I enthusiastically welcome Black-owned brands that make tiny bottles of serum that cost more than my groceries for the week.
Now onto the product: It's the bomb dot com, y'all! The top is also an eye drop applicator, so as you twist it off the serum goes into the narrow cylinder tube and is ready for application. The dropper fills up, but I never use the full amount. I've had it about two months now, using it in the morning and at night, and the bottle is still close to full. At this rate, I could easily see the product lasting close to a year. I apply a dab to each under eye and gently pat it in. It's a fine formula that spreads with ease and absorbs in an instant. The founder, Ozohu Adoh, sources her organic ingredients from Africa to maximize effectiveness. The Eye Serum's key ingredients are plankton extract for hyperpigmentation, bamboo silk for sebum absorption, and ash tree bark extract for under eye bags, shadows and dark circles. I can already feel that my under eyes are more bouncy and hydrated. I don't really struggle with dark circles so I can't speak to the results there, but I have noticed that my under eye area looks more radiant and bright — more awake if that makes sense. I truly love everything about the product: the ingredients, the story and the experience.
Get it from Epara for $147. Also available in 7 ml size for $77.

"I took one for the team. My friend that has done tattoos for my whole family and does them well. His shop had an invite-only party for his best clients, so my brother, his wife, and I were invited. A week before the party, his team had given us a flash sheet of tattoos to pick from. The party itself was nice, everyone was sober, and we all knew what tattoos we wanted.
Well, there were two other artists there besides my friend. I personally asked if my homie would do mine, as I dislike the woman that works for him. My sister-in-law ended up with her instead, and I went to sit with my homie.
Then she starts telling my SIL that she won't do the tattoo that SIL had picked because it sucks and tried pressuring her to get something she didn't want. I ended up trading spots with her, and my SIL got a cute, delicate clover on her collarbone. I got a fucking cabbage-ass flower. The artist was so rude. I'll get it covered, though a part of me thinks it's funny." —r4732565ca

This is good to keep in mind for those of us obsessed with flat or curling irons and blow dryers and treatments. No matter how great your hair looks in the moment, there's bound to be some long-term damage if you overdo it — so at least use a heat protector (like this HSI one, $14.89 on Amazon).
I used my blow-dryer to style my hair almost daily even when it was bad, I was just mindful while using it. Plus, I love to curl or wave my hair. While there's definitely some breakage, it's nothing overt.
OFC, if you're using constant and high heat on really brittle hair, you may want to lay off. Plus, with air-drying curl enhancers ($36 on Hair Story), sea-salt sprays ($26.24 for a Bumble & Bumble version on Amazon), and restyling sprays ($44 on Amazon for Oribe's), you can ditch the heat dependency and really embrace your natural hair.
Final Thoughts: I mean, 100% yes, if you're curling or straightening your hair to the point where it's breaking, then avoid heat products. Otherwise, use them at your own discretion and comfort — with a touch of common sense.

"If you start to develop burning or tingling that is uncomfortable, wash the product off. A little bit of tingling is normal with high percentage acids, but it shouldn’t be painful. If you start developing redness and sensitivity, you may be developing an allergic contact dermatitis or an irritant contact dermatitis to the ingredients, and I recommend you see a dermatologist for evaluation. If, however, you develop open sores and crusting, then that is a sign of potential infection," she added.

According to Vogue, genderless fashion has become increasingly favorable by designers, with many opting to "[merge] their men’s and women’s shows into co-ed shows." Others, as the publication points out, are choosing to "quietly [ignore] the gender labels of clothes" when considering options for styling celebrities.

"Great buy! Totally worth the $. This shirt is really tie-dyed, not just a tie-dye print like some of the other ones on here. I usually wear a size large shirt, have a 36C bust, and the large fit comfortably but I think someone with a larger chest would probably want to go a size up." —K. Freeland
"Amazing colors, great fit, super comfortable, and looks rad. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a relaxed and comfy fit." —Mads
"I wanted to wait to write a review until the shirt had been worn and washed a few times and I'm glad I did. The quality of this product is beyond what I had expected! Bright vibrant colors that last with a beautiful pattern and the shirt itself has stayed true-to-size after several washes! I am extremely happy with my purchase!" —PracticalMage

Color: Under certain lights, I did feel like it had an orange tint. However, in natural lighting, like in the photo above, the tan looked pretty natural.
Coverage: This had good coverage with very minimal streaking. Even though the directions said to rinse, I did feel like it washed off a little too much of the tan. (After it's applied, it dries but is sticky to the touch. I was able to wear a robe while it dried, and I actually ended up leaving it on for three hours before I rinsed it off.)
Smell: It reminds me of a good-smelling shampoo. It definitely does not have that unpleasant, distinct smell that most fake tans have. BIG PLUS!
Days it lasted: The tan gradually got lighter, but I would say that around the fifth or sixth day, it was pretty much completely faded.
Price: $21.95 for a 4.9-ounce bottle on Amazon.

In detail, Candace explained, "Some of my favorite foods for healthy, glowing skin are berries and bell peppers, which are high in antioxidants and vitamin C, crucial for the formation of collagen! Broccoli, packed with zinc known for its skin-healing properties along with a compound called sulforaphane, is known to help prevent cancer. Green tea is high in antioxidants, which help neutralize free radical damage, it's also incredibly anti-inflammatory — inflammation is something we always want to reduce within the body, since it can be directly linked to several skin conditions, accelerated aging, and even cancers. Avocados, packed with healthy fats known for keeping our skin moisturized, young, and flexible. Fatty fish, like salmon, keep the skin thick, moisturized, and supple. Dark chocolate is even considered to be a part of a healthy skin diet, keep it 70% cocoa or higher, which maximizes the chocolate's health benefits and tends to be lower in sugar. Cocoa is known for its high antioxidant content and ability to aid in healthy blood flow, which keeps us glowing."
"Also, foundation is made to be applied in a thin layer. If you are trying to have a full coverage look, you should opt for a product with more pigment rather than trying to apply a thick layer of a product that is not as pigmented. In the areas where you need more coverage, that is where you will apply your concealer," she explained.
Maybe I don't have to buy a curling wand after all!

Me: I know there are many options on the market, but is there one that is deemed the "safest" overall?
Minkin: If somebody wants absolutely no side effects whatsoever, a condom, contraceptive foam, or a diaphragm are very safe. They have no hormones and no gadgets – but, the problem is they have a higher failure rate. If you use them, knowing you will get a first trimester abortion if they fail, there have been statistical papers that say this is the safest method of contraception. The problem with this is it puts you through the emotional issues of having an unplanned pregnancy, which is a significant emotional issue for many people. In addition, most people don't want the inconvenience of using a barrier method and having to use it every time.
I would say birth control or IUDs with low levels of hormones can offer lighter periods and less cramps. There are all sorts of pluses and minuses as far as what is the best for you. You should talk to your doctor about what contraceptive is best for your needs. There is not one method that I can say is the best or the safest, BUT, what I can say, is that all methods are really quite safe.
The scene above was proven NOT to be a Mandela effect though! The first edition of the DVD shows the scene with a dryer, but the later editions were edited to address safety concerns. Basically, Disney didn't want to set the example of children crawling in dryers – so their solution was to change the dryer into a pizza box.

Who really has the time to handwash their delicates? Scrubbing your bras in the bathroom sink can take a backseat to life’s other obligations. Good news: Machine-washing your bras is totally allowed. “The day that I‘ll handwash my bras, I will have nothing else to do in my life,” Lawson says.
To prevent your bras (both everyday and sports bras) from getting tangled and mangled with other clothes, make sure the hooks are clasped and place your bras in a lingerie bag before tossing them in the washer. Set the water temperature to “warm” (not hot, not cold) and use a gentle laundry detergent that doesn’t contain chlorine or bleach. Let the washer run on the gentle or delicate cycle.
And for those dead-set on hand-washing, where are you getting all this free time? Anyway, fill up your sink with cool water and a small amount of detergent and fully submerge your bras. Let them soak for a few minutes before rinsing with fresh, cool water.
For everyday bras, give them a wash after every two to three wearings to remove all the skin cells, sweat, and other oils your body produces. Yes, it’s a hefty ask, but your bras will thank you later. Sports bras can get away with a wash after every use, but keep in mind the stress that washing puts on the spandex. To avoid a full wash, you can rinse the bra with warm water and let it line-dry in between workouts.
If you were to dye it one color, which would it be?
A: I think some people have a moment where they KNOW they found 'the one' and some don't. I don't think this means one marriage is going to last over the other. I actually never had that moment because I am someone who always has hesitations — no matter what — because I overthink things. Even if someone was scientifically matched to be my perfect person, I would still question it.
My husband always says that looks and attraction will never get you through an entire marriage. And it's true. I think a lot of people hold certain things — like looks — to a higher standard than they should when they look for a partner to marry. That stuff is not going to matter when real-life issues arise. Can your personalities coexist on a daily basis, are you able to rely on this person, and can you truly trust them? These are the types of things that are more important at the end of the day. Also, are you willing to put their needs before your own and make sacrifices in your life for them?
Lastly, another important thing to ask yourself is: Does this person inspire me? Because you eventually start taking on some of the same habits as your partner — even if you don't realize it. So, you really want to be with someone who is going to push you to be better and inspire you to live your fullest life.
I know her description says "fat loss," but that wasn't my personal goal. I wanted a circuit that involved a lot of cardio exercises, and this fit the bill.

We want to note that these are just SOME people's unpopular opinions around beauty; however, do what makes YOU happy and what makes you feel beautiful.
When you think about grooming and beauty habits, you may not automatically think about men (sorry, fellas). A lot of the beauty industry, including products, videos, and overall content, tends to skew toward women, often leaving men, nonbinary people, and countless other groups off the table. However, companies and brands that dismiss men are leaving a LOT of money on the table: The men’s beauty market is only growing, with projected sales of $67 billion in 2020 alone.
Brandon Patton and Evan Alexander wanted to have not only a safe space where Black men could discuss grooming and challenging cultural norms, but a community that could educate others on how to properly care for facial hair. "Being a Black man in America, I have to worry about what image my beard creates, so growing a beard takes a lot of self-confidence,” Patton told BuzzFeed. The two began the Facebook group Black Men’s Beard VIP in 2015, a men's “online grooming salon” that allows its 4,000-plus active members to share tips, discover self-care for Black masculinity and identity, and rebel against Black facial hair stereotypes.
Read on to learn more about how the two started this cool community and what they hope this adds to the larger beauty conversation.
In your own words, can you tell us a bit about Black Men's Beard VIP and why you started the FB group?
BP: "I didn't see anyone on social media who spoke our language, catered to our needs, and who could relate to us about growing a healthy beard. There wasn't space for men to be vulnerable and learn about self-love. So I decided to create a place of solace for men to feel comfortable being themselves and embrace it."
Grooming has been seen as a "woman" thing, even though men do care about their skincare (and their beards!). How does the FB group destigmatize beauty standards across genders, but also age, race, socioeconomic background, etc.?
"We focus on being our greatest selves. The people in our group see grooming as part of their process and journey to become their best self and people want to be great regardless of age, race, and socioeconomic backgrounds."
Black hair, in particular, is seen through a very narrow and oftentimes problematic lens in society. Facial hair is no exception. As a Black man, can you discuss the importance of having a platform like this to discuss what's happening on a larger scale, but also how acts of discrimination and prejudices affect the individual?
"Our Black Men’s Beard Facebook group serves as a safe place for men of color growing or beginning their beard journey. It provides a network of support, with understanding and empathy for men. This safe space is important because it allows members to seek advice, have unfiltered conversations, and connect without the worry of meeting Eurocentric beliefs."
What are some of the stereotypes that have been placed on you or others because of your facial hair? How do you work to break those down? Are those situations where race is the only factor, and is your FB group exclusive to Black men?
"The prejudgments or prejudice associated with being a bearded man of color are vast. For some, the prejudgments are instilled in them in the home — having heard the groans of older generations perpetuating Eurocentric beliefs by asking the younger generation to assimilate with mainstream society by shaving or cutting their beard, with the hopes that this act of adaptation will provide a more respectable and accepted image. However, people are flawed with unconscious biases.
For example, the presence of a beard could cause someone to be intimidated or think that someone is unapproachable, causing them to prematurely draw conclusions such as 'He doesn’t fit the company culture' or 'He seemed aggressive.' These assumptions or unconscious biases are damaging and hurtful. It can inhibit one’s corporate ascension or delay opportunities. It could also lead some to believe that they are not worthy or good enough as they are.
Our Facebook group is open to anyone who requests to join the group. However, the majority of our members are men of color.
Understand everyone’s story is unique, so embrace yourself and your beard!"
Alright, so let's talk about some of the good content we can find on the page!
"On our page, you can find a plethora of beard care tips. You will also find our fitness videos that men do at home; seven-day fruit fast challenges to encourage healthier beards, skin, and hair; and different smoothie recipes men can create at home."
What are your favorite beard tips? We need to know how to grow and keep a flourishing and healthy beard!
"I recommend these simple core tips. 1) Use beard care tools to grow a healthier beard. 2) Do a beard scrub 1–2 times per week. 3) Hydrate your beard with a beard hydrator. 4) Detox your beard once a week, once per month, or once every three months to improve the skin underneath your beard. 5) Eat as healthy as possible to nourish your beard."
You also mention that the page isn't JUST about beards, but also taps into conversations like Black manhood and masculinity, etc. Can you discuss how the two worlds are created and how you're using grooming as a way to have some of these bigger conversations within and outside of the Black community?
"Yes, our group isn't just about beards. It's about being responsible for yourself, family, and your community. This level of mentality requires accountability, consistent action, and personal growth. We practice these values through self-care and self-love when we groom ourselves.
We often take for granted the process of grooming and how much of an impact it can have on people's lives in our communities. If you can take consistent action with taking care of yourself, you can transfer that behavior to your family and throughout your community."
